Living Legoretta

When hired to design this dream home, Valerie Borden was excited to create this unique space.

The homeowners’ passion for the work of the premier architect of Mexico, Ricardo Legoretta, drove this design of a sleek and contemporary kitchen, as well as the need to accommodate their two kids, two cats, one dog and a large group of friends and family.

Valerie gave special attention to four distinct zones. The entertainment zone, housing a built-in coffee maker and separated from the morning rush for cereal and juice is also out-of-the way of guests hanging around the islands. This zone includes ample storage for a myriad of serve-ware. The large countertop is used for food preparation and serving. The sink keeps the main areas of the kitchen clear and a second dishwasher allows for extra helping-hands.

The East kitchen island is designed for sitting, enjoying food and conversation, while keeping the cook(s) company. An extra-large single bowl sink more than accommodates oversized pieces. A prep sink is placed on the South side of this island next to the refrigerator. A standard wall oven with a warming drawer is also ergonomically placed here.

The West kitchen island is a cook’s paradise with a six-burner range and a full-size built-in griddle. Placing the ventilation fan motor on top of the roof reduces the noise level to almost nothing. Extra deep drawers store pots and pans.

Last but not least, in the alcove is a stand-alone freezer, microwave and the homeowner’s favorite appliance, the high-heat oven. Getting minimal use, the freezer is placed out of the way. The high-heat oven has special ventilation to prevent heat build-up inside the alcove making this functional, even during hot Arizona summers.

“Function definitely came first with this design. The homeowners are avid cooks who love to entertain,” says Borden. “I think contemporary design where less is more, is much more detailed and time consuming. Each element plays a significant role in creating a harmonious finished product. You can’t cover things up with accessories after the fact,” Borden also says.

At the Western end of the kitchen is a custom dining table for twelve with a pass-through view to their amazing backyard. It’s time to party here!!
